New Research from Klout: How to Maximize Your Engagement During the #WorldCup
June 17, 2014

We recently published our findings about which topics help you create the biggest reaction online, and which social channels generate the greatest engagement for these topics.

We’ve found that content about Entertainment and Lifestyle are the two most engaged topics on both Facebook and Twitter, with music and television ranking #1 and #2 on each network respectively. Moving beyond the top 10, we uncovered some surprising differences between topics people engage with on each of the two networks.

As we’ve said at Klout, the best way to strike a chord with your unique set of friends and followers is to create content that is likely to resonate with them. With the World Cup commanding billions of soccer fan’s attentions for the next month, Soccer (or Fútbol) is a highly engaged topic online. The World Cup is expected to be the most social sporting event in history, so knowing where your social media posts will have the biggest impact is valuable. According to our research, your content about Cristiano Ronaldo’s game winning goal will likely have a bigger impact as a tweet, than a Facebook status. Soccer ranks #16 on Twitter and only #94 on Facebook.

We aren’t surprised that Soccer ranks higher on Twitter than Facebook. Twitter is increasingly used as a tool for breaking news and sharing exclusive content. The fact that Twitter can provide fans with up-to-the-minute, real-time conversations about sporting events creates the next best thing to watching the game in real life!

Here’s the best way to get the most engagement during the World Cup

You now know that Twitter is the best suited social channel for maximizing engagement about Soccer related content. Here are some tips for establishing yourself as the true authority about the World Cup on social media.

Include the official hashtags in your tweets

To ensure that your content gets the highest exposure, make sure you’re using the official World Cup hashtags: #WorldCup, #WorldCup2014, or #Brazil2014 for your play by play tweets of the game. As a result, not only will your Klout Score likely get a boost, but if you create especially engaging content, your tweet may end up in the special Twitter curated World Cup timeline. If you want to take a step further and connect with other fans that share your passion for a particular team, consider using each team’s official hashtags to reach a more niche community. For example, the U.S. Men’s National Team is using #USMNT, and England is using #3Lions.

Use social media to consistently voice your support for your favorite teams

Create true engagement by posting about the World Cup teams and players you’re authentically passionate about. We can’t tell you who to support, but according to our research, these teams and players are winning on social media and have received the highest number of mentions in the past 90 days.*
